Dr Alec McDonald
Alec McDonald graduated from the University of Glasgow Medical School in 1986 and undertook specialist oncology training in Glasgow and on Merseyside.
He has more than 10 years experience at consultant level, based in the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. His specialist clinical practice deals exclusively with gastro-intestinal malignancies, in particular colorectal cancer.
His special interests include the use of adjuvant (post-operative) and neo-adjuvant (pre-operative) therapies, the incorporation of new drugs into clinical practice, the combined use of radiation & chemotherapy and the treatment of metastatic disease.
His previous research has included laboratory evaluation of mechanisms of chemotherapy drug resistance, clinical studies evaluating new drugs and novel methods to improve the management of rectal cancer. He is a member of the British Assocaition of Cancer Research and sits on the NCRI sub-groups for the treatment of both rectal and anal cancers.
